ABOUT THE COMIC
Well… here we are. Book One is complete - I still can’t quite believe it. This has been YEARS in the making. My name is Aura Gold, the person crazy enough to turn Ibiza’s history into a comic book series. The phrase “herding cats” comes to mind. Like all good stories, let’s start at the beginning.
Book 1: How It All Began can be bought here, through your local Amazon.
who am i?
I’ve been creating custom comics since 2012. I have a custom comic studio called Make Me A Comic. I spend my working days brainstorming and writing comic stories for clients — from personal love stories to full-blown fictional superhero worlds. I write and design all the comics, then work with an incredible art team who bring those visions to life. I suppose creative director is my “official” role, but I prefer “professional storyteller”. Over the years, I’ve also created custom comics for businesses including Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, and Google. I sincerely LOVE what I do; it doesn’t feel like work.
How did the idea come about?
I moved to Ibiza in July 2020, seeking refuge from the pandemic and looking for a new place to call home. I’d spent the previous 15 years living all over the world, and although I hadn’t been to Ibiza in nearly 20 years, I was pulled back. I’ve always loved electronic music — I’ve spent decades dancing in clubs and festivals around the world — I guess the BPM drew me in. It didn’t take long before I caught a whiff of a few crazy Ibiza stories… and off I went down the rabbit hole. Weeks later, I resurfaced with my head spinning, completely hooked. I kept thinking: What a story! Then one sunny afternoon, I found an old tab of acid left over from Burning Man. It was stronger than expected, so cleaning my house quickly turned into sitting on the roof, pondering life. And that’s where We Love Ibiza was born — in the hills of San Juan, a magical village in the north of the island. I had no idea how huge the Ibiza story really was. I thought I’d just create a fun comic book for friends. I didn’t consider how many people it would involve, or how many years of work it would take. I was simply addicted to the madness of the island’s history. Ibiza really is like nowhere else on the planet.
How did I get started?
I began casually mentioning the idea to friends, and almost everyone said the same thing:“I’d buy that”. One introduction led to another, and before I knew it, I was interviewing people. It all happened very organically, a spiderweb of information as the island’s community started to open up to me. From the start, it always felt like Ibiza wanted this story to be told because the information flowed to me so easily. But I quickly understood that it had to be done in sync with the rhythm of the island. Slowly, steadily, organically.
It’s been very much about making friends, having coffees and cocktails, having lots of fun, and doing a lot of dancing. Connection was key, face-to-face. Showing a genuine interest and love for Ibiza - I didn’t want people to think I was sitting in an office in London just regurgitating information I found online and then planning to cash in on it. No, I wanted to hear stories firsthand from the very people whose story it was. What intrigued everyone was the format, a comic book. One that tells the “entire” story. This was new, this was fun - I mean, who doesn’t want to see themselves drawn in a comic?! And what better format to tell the Ibiza story than a comic book?! After all, pictures do say 1000 words. One of the first people I told was Dan Prince, one of founders of Mixmag. I could tell he thought it was a great idea, but it wasn’t until a couple of years later, when we finally met in person, that he said, “So…you really are mad enough to do this then?”. Turns out, yes. I am!

The obstacles…
It wasn’t all smooth sailing. After a few months of research and interviews, the scale of the project hit me; this was a BIG job — I became very overwhelmed. So many people, opinions, memories, and perspectives. I realised how protective people are of “their” Ibiza, and how important the island’s story is to them. Self-doubt set in, and I questioned whether I could pull it off.
I procrastinated BIG time. Then, in mid-2022, Juanito from Las Dalias asked if I’d like to include some comic pages about Las Dalias in the magazine, along with an advert for the Ibiza comic. I took that as my sign from the universe — and the rest is history. Thank you Juanito for unknowingly pushing me in the right direction.
What is it?
This project tells the history of Ibiza, starting from when the island rose from the ocean 155 million years ago. Ancient history is condensed, and from the 1950s onwards, the story becomes more detailed.
Ancient history was, of course, taken from books, but from the 0s onwards, the narrative was built primarily from people’s memories taken firsthand by me. Then the gaps were filled in through countless hours of research across books, blogs, social media, and film. I’ve researched, written, and designed the comic, with illustrations by Rodrigo Cardama, a professional illustrator and member of the Make Me A Comic art team. Yes, there will be things we missed, some information might be wrong - it relies heavily on people’s memories, which fade and get embellished over time. Plus 1 story can be told 1000 ways.
I’d like to take a moment to mention Martin Davies, who spent a lot of time with me correcting historical facts. Martin is a well-respected Ibiza historian; his input has been invaluable to the comic. Martin is also an editor, and he was very quick to highlight that I can’t punctuate to save my life (LOL). So thanks to Martin, at the 11th hour, Rodrigo and I spent many days re-editing the book. I hope it’s correct!. Thankfully going forwards Martin will edit the rest of the comic series (thank god).
The story is split across 4 or 5 books...
- Book 1: 155 million years ago – 1979
- Book 2: 1980 – 1987
- Book 3: 1988 – 1998
- Book 4: 1999 – 2010
- Book 5: - 2011 -2020
Why am I creating it?
Storytelling is as old as time. In a world where everything now moves so fast, it’s more important than ever to record history before it’s all forgotten. Given Ibiza’s very unique history, if we don’t record it now, whilst those memories are somewhat “fresh”, in decades to come, the story will seem so unbelievable that it could easily become a myth, because no one can actually prove it happened. This comic book series keeps the memory of Ibiza and its people alive.
how is this being created?
It’s thoroughly researched by me, not just by googling online, but actually tracking down and talking to the very people who are the story. It's taken quite a bit of detective work and good people skills to make it happen. Plus reading countless books and doing 1000's of hours research online.
When I look back at where I started and how far I have come, over 100 face to face interviews, 300 or more people contacted - it's quite incredible to watch it all come together. I hope to create THE best piece of Ibiza memorabilia to ever exist.
How is it being funded?
Book One of We Love Ibiza was financed for the first 5 years through the sale of custom comics from my business, Make Me A Comic. I didn’t have enough money to print, but I just knew a solution would reveal itself. That solution came in the shape of a friend, who expressed interest in the project and became an investor.
how is this being created?
From the moment I started this project, I knew I was creating something very special. One night at a party, I mentioned to someone that I make comics. She replied, “Have you seen that cool comic being made about Ibiza?”.
When people start telling you about what you’re creating without you mentioning it, you know you’re on the right track.
Almost every week, I meet someone who’s heard about the comic — asking how it’s going, or if it’s ever actually coming out (LOL). The enthusiasm and encouragement mean more than I can say. It’s really helped me stay motivated and carry on.
By buying Book 1 you help fund Book Two, which I aim to launch in May 2027. You can order Book 1 here.
With love and gratitude,
Aura Gold
